The transport industry has digitalised rapidly. Yet many of the everyday challenges still arise in the gaps between systems. Following the panel discussion at Elmia Lastbil, Shyping CEO Marcel Nemer highlights a key question for the industry’s next step: how do we enable information to follow the transport all the way through?
The order comes in, the transport is planned, the driver receives the assignment and the customer follows the delivery. Once the transport is completed, information needs to flow back for follow-up and new decisions. On paper, it is one connected flow. Digitally, the reality is often quite different.
– I believe the transport industry has more systems than it has connected flows. The problems arise primarily at the handovers: from the customer’s order to planning, from planning to the driver, and from the completed delivery back to the customer and the business, says Marcel Nemer, CEO of Tempcon company Shyping.
The issue was at the heart of the discussion when Marcel joined the Systems and Data panel during the seminar Digitalisation – from where we are today to the future: what does the transport industry need? at Elmia Lastbil. Together with representatives from Hogia and Semantic, the panel discussed topics including integrations, standardisation, data quality and real-time information.
The next step isn’t necessarily another system
Digitalisation has given the transport industry access to vast amounts of information. But value is only created when the right information can be used throughout the entire transport chain.
– It’s not primarily about adding another system. It’s about registering the right information once, giving it clear ownership and allowing it to follow the transport throughout the entire chain.
This is a central part of Shyping’s day-to-day work. Through Transport Management Systems (TMS), route planning and integrations, Shyping connects transport buyers, carriers and drivers – from order and planning to execution and reporting.
The right information at the right time
The same perspective applies to real-time information and AI. Faster information is not automatically better information, and new technology cannot compensate for poor data quality.
– Real-time information only has value if someone can act on it. And AI is an amplifier, not a cure. We need to start with data quality, clear ownership and common definitions, says Marcel.
Once those fundamentals are in place, the conditions improve for automation, smarter planning and earlier management of deviations.
Customers want fewer surprises
For the transport buyer, the outcome is far more tangible than systems and databases. Customers want to know that the delivery is on track – and receive relevant information in time when something deviates from plan.
– Customers aren’t asking for more data. They want fewer surprises.
That also captures much of the digital shift Marcel sees ahead: not more technology for technology’s sake, but better connected information flows that create value throughout the transport chain.
For Shyping and Tempcon, the next step is therefore to continue connecting systems and stakeholders – enabling information to follow the transport all the way through and turning data into genuine customer value.
